Well, we’re off to a banger start to the season with all resorts open and firing on all cylinders after a massive dumping of snow over the past week. As something different from the standard winter video reel, I decided to focus on my hometown of Ogden, Utah where I work and play all year around. Starting with shots from around town I build up to shots taken in the backcountry above Ogden, at Snowbasin, and at Powder Mountain. Enjoy and pray for snow!
After a wonderful summer of traveling, exploring, and taking time off of shooting and editing video, it felt great to sit down and do a little editing work today. Kory Davis of the non-profit Ogden Avalanche is hosting a fund-raiser next month, so I was able to support him by putting together a short promo using a drone shot I got of Kory last season. It was also great to see an article in Ski Journal magazine featuring Kory and the Ogden Avalanche non-profit. It was doubly special to see some of my photos used for the story and online advertising.
My software is up to date, my cameras are cleaned and updated, my gear is organized, and my mind is slowly transitioning away from summer pursuits towards thoughts of exploring mountains covered in snow. Come on Winter!
Summer is the time to explore the glorious mountains of the high country. With a wonderfully wet & snowy winter behind us, we'll have longer to wait for the trails and high passes to open up, but it'll be worth it. We especially love the Wind Rivers, and this year we plan on making several multiple day forays into this amazing range. This week the latest issue of American Angler magazine hit the stands, and I'm happy to see a photo essay of mine included amongst so many insightful articles. The photo essay focuses on getting into the backcountry with my daughters and is a compilation of many trips we've enjoyed over the years. Hopefully, it'll inspire others to introduce their loved ones to the wonders of our natural landscape, so the next generation can continue to appreciate and protect what we have right here in our backyard.
What’s there to do between skiing and backpacking seasons? Actually, there’s plenty of fun to be had, but it’s also a good time to get down to southern Utah in the van. If it can be combined with a bit of work, then all the better. Susan Yoshikawa-Torres at Coldwell Banker hired me to produce this drone video to promote the sale of the home, and it was so nice to work for a couple days in such a beautiful area of the state.
We’re quickly transitioning from winter to summer along the Wasatch Range. This is a video we recently created to promote summer activities at Solitude Resort.
Wow! What an amazing season! This short video promo for Snowbasin Resort will hopefully get everyone excited about doing it all again during the 2019-20 ski season.
We had a gorgeous morning to shoot this promotional video. I chose to shoot in 4K with lots of post-production light leaks and some pre-planned wipe transitions to liven up the edit.
Emma and I shot this a week and a half ago at Powder Mountain — sometimes one shot is all you need. I’ll be dreaming about this winter well into the summer.
What a wonderful winter to live here in the Wasatch Mountains! We’ve enjoyed exceptional snow since the start of the season, and we look forward to a couple more great months before winter bows its head and passes on the torch to the next season. Photos by Laurie & Chris Morgan
Love me some slow motion powder skiing!!! This is a quick edit of some of the shots we got of Kaylin Richardson while filming Shannon Bahrke and Kaylin at Deer Valley Resort in early January.
Let the snow fall and the content flow! The above videos are: A) Opening Day at Snowbasin Resort, B) shots at sunrise at the top of Snowbasin on Opening Day, C) a Mountain Collective ad featuring Kalen Thorien on the Grizzly downhill that we shot late last season, and D) a short theater advertisement featuring Alexandra Pallas that will be playing in local theaters. Pray for Snow!
Praying for Snow? Me, too. To whet your appetite for all things winter, here's a short demo reel of shots of skiing (and one boarder) taken over the past couple seasons along the Wasatch Front.
Yep, even though it doesn't at all look like winter outside, it's that time of year to start dreaming. Here's a video I created for Solitude Resort to promote the resort, the IKON Pass, and the upcoming 2018-19 winter season. Pray for Snow!
This past winter I was lucky enough to be asked to shoot content for this inspiring video (thanks you Claire at Eclectic Brew in Park City!). Jamie Crane Mauzy was a successful professional slopestyle skier when she suffered a life changing injury at a competition in Vancouver in 2014. Jamie's enthusiasm and zest for life really show through in the video as she persevered from clinging on to life to being back on the slopes. It was a pleasure meeting Jamie and being asked to shoot her skiing segments for the video at PCMR. The video was created for the National Ability Center to promote their organization and all they do to help people like Jamie live active and healthy lives.
There's nothing like a rotator cuff and SLAP tear surgery to slow down your pace of life. Fortunately, it also gave me time to sort through all my digital assets and get somewhat organized. Here is an amalgamation of the photos and videos I shot over the past winter season. Enjoy.
Congratulations to Dave Trevino, Kyle Walcott, James Cawley, and Tim Jones for participating in this year's Ski City Shootout hosted by Visit Salt Lake. It was a fun opportunity to meet these creative filmmakers, as well as be given the task of creating the supporting video intros and graphics for the evening's event.
I've been working on a lot of different projects lately, but there's a great satisfaction in shooting, editing, and releasing a video all in the same say. These three videos were created that way without weeks or months of editing, tweaking, second guessing, and waiting for the right time to release the product to the world. Enjoy and pray for more snow!
